Greetings One and All!

I hope that your weekend is going to be great...the weather here should be nice and warm..

I am now ready to reserve my domain name. I have the choice of either using a 3 word domain name or hypernating 2 words..

wild-purple.com
wildpurpledesigns.com

wildpurple.com is already taken.

Since I use Wildpurple on my journal and elsewhere, I am thinking that wild-purple.com is the best option for consistency sake. However, do you think that there would be a problem with people remembering to use the hyphen and thus end up on the wrong site?

Or does someone have another word I can use besides 'designs"...that is so overworked that I just don't like it.

well, as long as you remind people it's hyphenated, it should be fine. when you tell them verbally, of course. if it's written down or printed on a card it should be fine, too.

and: if you include all possible misspellings in your keyword/decription of the site, it should help search engines bring your site up no matter what.

i used to hyphenate my company name...i did find that people forgot it when they sent me an email (i had wonderland-q@... wonderlandq@...) so when i finally got around to get my domain i left it out. i, of course, didn't need to worry about someone else out there having already bought wonderlandq.com.

so, my opinion would be to leave out the hypens if at all possible. i think it is easier for people to remember a whole other word than punctuation.

The hyphen could be a problem - especially since the unhyphenated wildpurple is already taken, you could unintentionally be sending a lot of people their way. Plus, since that one seems to be parked for now, they may think it is your website and it is just not active yet and leave without trying the hyphenated version.

I say go for the longer one - then again, I might be biased, as I have an insanely long domain name (which I love, though!).

Good luck!

Thanks for the comments...

I agree with all that you said about the parked spot being mistaken for mine...maybe I can do soemething in my promotional material that emphasizes the fact to remember the hyphen.

Or does anyone have another word I can use besides 'designs'...I really just hate that word for some reason

A friend of mine has a hyphenated domain name. I check his site all the time. And almost ALWAYS forget the hyphen. However, once I get to the porn site that the non-hyphenated name points to, I realize I'm wrong and put in the hyphenated one.

So I think that you're probably fine. You might want to start hyphenating your site stuff, too? Just a thought. I don't know if I like that idea, but it could be helpful.

That would be an eye opener...you expect to see crocheted purses and instead see.....yikes! HAHA!!

Whichever I do I want it to match, and you raise an interesting issue with using the hyphenated version in other places as well.

Man!! Why couldn't the regular name be available? <---pouting...LOL!

i think you should go wildpurple.net, or wildpurple.us, etc there are a lot of options for after the dot it seems, and then you could have the exact name you want. Hyphens do wreck havok

Hmmm..that's a thought.

You think that people wouldn't remember .net? or are you saying that they won't remeber the hyphen and that using .net is a good alternative?

Personally, I don't like URLs with hyphens because they are harder to remember. I would choose wildpurpledesigns.com because the word 'designs' tells people what the site is about. It sounds the most professional.

wildpurpledesigns.com

I dont like sites with hypens, they are harder to remember, and also not a quickly found if you are doing a search on a web browser.

From all the responses, the hyphen is clearly not the way to go...thanks all of you for convincing me, cause I was so "in love" with wild-purple.com, that I am glad that you all gave me your opinions as to the "reality" of its practicality/usability/memorability<---that's not a word but you get it. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion about the quickness of web browser searching...I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks for weighing in with your vote!

Yeah, I would opt to leave the hyphen out. I agree with the other comments. Plus, wouldn't you be kind of bummed if you owned "Wildpurple.com", and then found out there's a new site called "Wild-purple.com"?
I would go with a completely different name-that way there will be no confusion! You will never have to worry about sending potential customers to a different site, or having them just not find you at all! You will be truely unique, just like your creations! =)

just read others comments about the hyphen which would make the creations bit (if you happened to like it that is) not work because it would be too long, look messy etc...

I think that would be absolutely cool with the creative spelling...'wyld'

I think that it might have the same issues as the hyphens with people not remembering my creative spelling of the word wild

That was a great suggestion! Thanks!

I vote for wildpurple.net. I use to have a .net site (bellayou.net) and I never had any complaints about it. That's not to say that people didn't have problems with it... maybe they did, but I never heard of any problems with it.

My concerns would be that potential customers would forget the hyphen - and assume that wildpurple.com is your site - (or that your site is no longer in business).

WildPurpleDesigns.com is easier to remember - partly because it pretty much "spells" out your type of business.

The hyphen iea is officially "dead". Thank you all for helping me avoid a potentially disasterous domain name choice.

As much as I think that the word 'designs' has been used to death, it really is a good choice for a word to append to wild purple, both in the domain name as well as giving a viewer a good idea of what type of business I am, and it is easily remembered, spelled and sounds good whn spoken...

Thank you all once again for helping me make a decision! I really appreciate it.

I'd also go for the wildpurpledesigns.com or something similar. I like .net names better than .com myself, but one does tend to assume .com. But when thinking of titles/names/etc I think it's good to go with something you can easily say verbally, people are more likely to remember it.

Greetings! I really like your icon!

I think that you raise a good issue with it being easy to express the title verbally as well as beng memorable.

I am almost convinced of going with Wildpurpledesigns.com. I am going to make the final decision in the morning.

Thanks for your input!
